Gaming / Apple / Linux ..

FlexTime : A versatile timer for your repetitive activities. This is a very nifty application ( Mac OS X ) that can help you stay on track and get things done. Definitely recommended.

DirectX10: The Next Generation in Gaming: As you may have noticed, if you are a regular reader, I give Microsoft a lot of credit for all things gaming. The forthcoming DX10 looks awesome ( check the pictures on that page ) and ultra sweet. Last time I tried to built something using DX ( some two years ago ), I got overwhelmed due to all those COM interfaces I have to utilize to do the simplest things. OpenGL has such a great and beautiful API.. However, from what I have been gathered, things have changed since then. Programming with DX is more straight forward than it used to be. I will give it a try once Vista comes along (IF ever.. ).

Must have Nintendo DS Programs : Homebrew applications for your DS. I am going to try to use ScummVM on my DS. Looks great.

Gus Mueller half-jokingly believes an ..iSight HD is coming along soon and provides a good reason why he thinks so. Interesting.

I installed Ubuntu (latest) on a Parallels Workstation VM today. Runs like a charm. OpenSolaris is next.

Quickies

I 've wasted over 2 months examining the source code of Arachne ( a few dozen thousands line of code ) over and over again, ran a million debugging sessions, used Valgrind more times that one could count in order to track down those 2 obscure bugs/issues that I couldn't figure out. A few days ago, we got a trial of IBM's Purify ( awesome stuff ). It told me what Valgrind couldn't tell me but I suspected all along; there are stack overflow/corruption issues. Thing is, I am not using any recursion at all, almost all my objects reside in heap and it didn't make any sense. I even got Insure++ ( another awesome piece of software ) that told me the same thing Purify was telling me, albeit with different words: something is wrong with the stack and something is also wrong with the system libraries. So I tried building and running arachne on one of our HP blades running RedHat Enterprise linux - fresh install. The results? Not a single problem or even warning reported by either valgrind or purify. I haven't tried Insure++ on it yet ( need another trial license for it ) but I am pretty sure it will also find nothing tomorrow that I will. Our development server had corrupt / outdated / malfunctioning system libraries. This is what it was. Needless to say, its going to be formatted and upgraded to RH Enterprise asap. I hate buggy system software.
